Anyway, while the family was away, I took Audrey out on a shopping date (and was questioned by her the whole way: "Mom, are you sure you're going the right way? I kinda wish Dad was with us..."). I gots the GPS, girlfriend. I was feeling pretty confident driving to High Wycombe until I realized I had to fill the car up. Yikes. If driving is totally difficult here, filling up must be quite a feat as well!
I'd seen Stegen fill up a few times, but my pits were still drenched as I pulled up to the station. I parked (on the right side!) and approached the clerk to pre-pay for station 3. He chuckled, told me he goes on trust here, and had me fill up first. Ok, cool, things were going well. I get back to the car and try to open the little door to my tank--fail. Is it locked? I scoured the car for a lever or button to push, but found nothing. Filling up was turning out to be just as hard as driving--I knew it!! So I ask the lady next to me how to open up the tank and she gives me a strange look before suggesting I just "pull it open."
Yeah, that worked. Four embarrassing minutes later, I was back with the clerk, ready to pay. He kinda chuckles about what happened outside and then tells me to have a nice journey home. Whoa now. I'm totally from here! It was just a silly tank door glitch, really! So I tell him, "Oh, actually, I'm from here...like Henley." His response: "Right then, erm, have a nice journey home...?" Talk about overcompensating...oops!
Aside from that incident, we made it home in one piece and I'm about to drive out to Wargrave (on my own!) for some Indian cuisine with a friend. Today's weather was spectacular--about 60 degrees, the kids got in shorts and t-shirts to jump on the trampoline out back and I got slightly tanned/burned. I wonder how I'll handle the scorching summer days in CA when we move back!
60 degrees! That's not just a spectacle--that's life-threatening!
